Dangerous Drugs

Find out if you have a dangerous drug claim

Millions of people take some sort of prescription or over-the-counter drug or health supplement every day. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration regulates prescription drugs and oversees serious dangers in over-the-counter products as well. The FDA requires new drugs to be proven safe before marketing them. With regulations in place to verify the quality and safety of foods and medicines, should we be worried that unsafe drugs enter the marketplace? The answer is yes. Thousands of people have been seriously injured or killed by dangerous drugs, despite the regulations in place.  Our drug side effects lawyers can help you with your claim.

Dangerous drugs can include both prescription and over-the-counter medicines consumers take to improve their health. However, some medications have serious side effects that, when weighed against the benefits, are found more harmful than helpful.  Manufacturers have a responsibility to protect people from being harmed by dangerous drugs and substances. The injuries caused by long-term exposure to prescription drugs and over-the-counter supplements are often permanent and life-threatening. These injuries may include birth injury; damage to organs, such as the heart, liver or kidneys; damage to the brain or nervous system; and many types of cancer.

For example, in 1989 the FDA issued a nationwide recall of all over-the-counter dietary supplements providing 100 milligrams or more of L-TRYPTOPHAN due to its association with Eosinophilia-Myalgia Syndrome (EMS). Symptoms of EMS include fatigue, shortness of breath, rash, swelling of the extremities, and in some cases congestive heart failure.

Likewise, Prempro and other hormone replacement therapy drugs can cause pulmonary embolism, strokes, and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in some women. Ephedra is known as a nutritional supplement, which in reality is a dangerous drug that can cause fatal heart attacks and stroke. Accutane has many side effects, including sudden depression and suicide. Finally, many cholesterol drugs have serious side effects, and Baycol has been withdrawn from the market for kidney damage (rhabdomyolysis).

Pay attention for side effects associated with more dangerous prescription drugs on this list:

  • Vioxx
  • Bextra
  • Crestor
  • Accutane
  • Anti-depressants
