The Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is reporting a new study released on Thursday shows women using the Ortho Evra® birth control patch have double the chance of developing blood clots as women using the more conventional pill. The FDA warns the results are preliminary and further research comparing the patch to the pill is required.
The study is one of two being conducted to directly compare the Ortho Evra® birth control patch to the pill. The first study’s interim results showed no increased of blood clots; however, the second clearly showed the twofold risk for venous thromboembolic events, or clots in the legs and lungs.
Dr. Daniel Shames, director of the division of reproductive and urological drug products at FDA, warns the risk for a woman not using a contraceptive to develop a blood clot is about 1 per year in 10,000. For women using a contraceptive, that risk increases to 3 or 5.
