Avandia® (Rosiglitazone Maleate) and drugs that contain Avandia®, namely Avandamet® and Avandaryl®, are prescribed to treat Type 2 diabetes. These drugs have been linked to heart attacks, strokes and congestive heart failure (CHF). In some instances, vision loss and bone fractures were reported.

In May 2007, the report of a study linking Avandia® to an increased risk of heart attacks and death from heart disease was released by the New England Journal of Medicine under the publication’s early-release policy, which is reserved for reports with especially important implications for patients. The analysis showed that Avandia® users have a 43% increased risk of suffering a heart attack and a 64% risk of death from heart disease. The concern at the FDA over the increased risk of heart attack and death from heart disease among Avandia® users was so great that by July 2007 it was considering adding a “black box” warning to the label for Avandia®. A black box warning is the strongest warning of risk that a prescription drug can receive. The black box warning was finally added to the labels of Avandia®, Avandamet® and Avandaryl® in November 2007.

In addition to heart attacks, Avandia® has also been linked to congestive heart failure. As early as 2005, an FDA scientist was advocating for a black box warning for CHF to be added to the label for Avandia®. However, it took a 2007 congressional investigation before a black box warning for CHF was added to the label.

One of the most unsettling details about Avandia® is that many experts believe that it may not provide a benefit to diabetics. Avandia® works by lowering blood sugar. It was believed that lowering blood sugar would help prevent cardiovascular events. Now that Avandia® has been linked to an increase in cardiovascular events, there appears to be no benefit, and in fact a harm, to diabetics taking Avandia®. Even so, experts urge Avandia® users to continue to take the drug until they talk to their doctor about the matter.
