Cancer Misdiagnosis
Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer among men. Delayed diagnosis of prostate cancer is one of the most common medical mistakes. Early diagnosis of prostate cancer is critical. If treatment is delayed, the patient may need much more extensive surgery, chemotherapy or radiation therapy than he might otherwise have needed. Delay in diagnosis and treatment can reduce the patient's chances of survival and may ultimately be the difference between life and death.
Every man over the age of 40 should have a digital rectal examination as part of his regular annual physical checkup. The American Cancer Society recommends that men age 50 and over have an annual PSA blood test. If there is a family history (father or brother), or African-American background, PSA screening should begin at age 40.
Symptoms of prostate cancer may include blood or pus in the urine or semen, difficulty in starting or stopping urination, inability to urinate, weak or interrupted urine flow, need to urinate frequently (especially at night), painful or burning urination and continuing pain in the lower back, pelvis or upper thighs.
