Cerebral Palsy

Treatment

Most treatment for cerebral palsy is not aimed at curing the condition, but rather at improving the quality of life for those who are afflicted with it. Most of the treatment options are designed to assist a child with cerebral palsy in achieving the maximum potential in growth and development. They include:

  • Therapy. Therapy is a non-surgical, non-invasive method of treating the symptoms of cerebral palsy. It focuses on the particular needs of the individual in order to achieve the best results. The most common therapies for people with cerebral palsy are speech therapy, physical therapy and occupational therapy.
  • Medication. Certain medications can be used to control the symptoms of cerebral palsy such as spasticity.
  • Surgery. Surgery is usually the last resort in treating the symptoms of cerebral palsy. It is most often used to treat only the most severe symptoms associated with nerve and muscle coordination.
