Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma Research
Research in the treatment of mesothelioma and all cancer is ongoing. Breakthroughs are being made on a regular basis. Some of these breakthroughs occur as a result of treating cancerous cells with drugs that have been developed to deal with other medical problems. For example, the chemotherapy drug Alimta, developed by Eli Lilly has seen some success is treating malignant pleural mesothelioma when surgery is not an option.
Currently, professionals in the medical field lack knowledge of many aspects of mesothelioma and continue to conduct research. For example, it is not known how the fibers that settle in the lungs actually turn into cancer, or how many fibers are required to constitute a potentially cancerous state. More significantly, there is no known cure for mesothelioma yet, as is the case with other cancers. There is also question over what treatment method results in the best results, as multimodal treatments (a combination of treatments) have become popular for patients fighting the disease.
