Spinal Cord Injury
Spinal Cord Injury Research
On promising new treatment currently being explored by researchers is Schwann cell transplantation. Schwann cells are cells that are not normally present in the central nervous system, which includes the brain and spinal cord. They are found in the peripheral nervous system, which serves the rest of the body. They help maintain nerve cells throughout the body. Researchers believe that the transplantation of peripheral nervous system tissue, which contains Schwann cells, to the site of the spinal cord njury may stimulate the repair of damage that has already been done.
